Student Leadership

Student Leadership

Students in all year levels have opportunities to build their voice, agency and leadership skills within the classroom and in the yard. Helping students to develop their voice empowers them and builds pride in our school. Specifically, students in Years 3-6 have the opportunity to take on formal leadership roles within their classroom and across the school.

School Captains

Each year, two Year 6 students are selected as the School Captains. Students in Year 5 prepare speeches at the end of term four and present these to their peers and teachers. They also undergo an interview process in order to select the School Captains for the following year. Outgoing School Captains present the new School Captains with their badges at the last assembly of the year. School Captains represent the school at important community events and work closely with the School Principal in presenting the weekly Assembly.

Junior School Captains

Students in Year 3 upwards are invited each year to join the Junior School Council. In Term One students prepare and deliver a speech to their peers and teachers and an election is held to ascertain who will sit on Junior School Council for the year. Generally the team consists of 10 or more students and includes the School Captains.

The students work with staff to represent the voice of their classmates. Duties can include implementing school improvement projects, raising money and awareness of various social justice issues, developing leadership skills and role modelling our REACH values.

House Captains

Colac South West Primary School has four Houses – Saturn (Blue), Neptune (Yellow), Mercury

(Red) and Jupiter (Green). In Term One House Captains present and deliver a speech to the other students and teachers in their House. These leadership opportunities exist for Years 5 and 6 students and generally each House will have two House Captains and one or two Vice Captains.

Students work with the teacher in charge of Houses to promote the House Points system and to collect and collate House Points each week. House Captains assist on sports days and provide mentorship for junior students in learning new games that can be played outside. House Captains’ pride and joy is the Colac South West Primary School House Cup which is announced at the end of each year.
